Discussion #3

Sign in to Facebook (if you have it) and write down all the ads you see and share with us. Will Twitter be negatively affected by ads? If Facebook/YouTube/Twitter had too many ads would you use it less? Do you think ads on social networking sites are effective? Or just annoying?

Reminder... every week I'll grade the previous week's discussion question.

5 points = nice work, good thoughts, keep it up
3 points= you wrote something but I need a little more next time
0 points = wrote nothing or just a few words

  1. the only ads I saw were for petmeds.com the FBI and some online college. Honestly, if facebook and youtube ended up advertising too much, I would easily stop using it so often. I would hate having to get through or seeing 50 ads just to see a video or post something on facebook

  2. I had no ads on my facebook that I seen on my page besides requests. An yes Twitter would be negatively effected with ads. No one goes on twitter an wants see an ad it's a quick look at a persons status an anything that slows down that process will effect it negatively. If there was alot of ads on FB yes I would use it alot less an depending on how annoying the ads get while your jus lookin an your friends pictures an ads pop-up that would make it Very Annoying. The only advertising I think would be ok on a social networking site are things that people can use to socialize better an make communication easier an a better experience.

Thats all I saw. pretty weak ads. If it became like some places like NFL.com(you have to watch 15 second ads in order to watch some highlights) I know I wouldnt use it as much. They are definitely more annoying than effective if you ask me. But then again, some people do find them helpful.

  4. Resident Evil Afterlife 3D for me... hmm... nice try Facebook, but not really interested.

Chad, I know what you mean-- whenever I want to watch a highlight on ESPN it makes me watch a commercial.

Question: Would you rather pay a couple bucks for commercial free ESPN or NFL or watch a 15 second ad each time?

  5. Yeah I'd definitely take an ad I suppose. I don't feel like paying for something that has been free for a long time.

  8. Do you love Shoes?

    Chiq.com

    Frontierville

    Diapers

I find the ads more annoying than effective- even if I did want to buy new shoes I'm not taking advice from Facebook on where to buy them, and I'm not playing Frontierville- ever. Never ever. I think ads suck but I'm not going to stop Facebooking because of them.

  9. The ads that I saw while on Facebook were ads for the Hallmark Channel, Pizza Hut, Yaz/Yasmine birth control, Canvas on Demand and and ad for the new album from Maroon 5.

What I've noticed is that Facebook will sometimes show you ads based on what you have "liked." Sort of like Tivo for Fb.

If Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc. started advertising more I would stop using them. The ads are annoying to me. I like being able to go about my business with limited ads.
