Let's say McDonald's decides to change their main target market from children to adults. How would they have to change their advertising? What about their food selections? Their restaurants?
Their advertising would be altered to the point where a better variety of foods would be available. I think maybe McDonald's would make their meals a little more healthy from then on out. They would definitely redecorate their restaurants so it's not so youth looking.
First of all they would probably ditch the play area and bite sized food like chicken nuggets. I think they would offer more of a variety in food and go with some more neutral colors, and hopefully kick that creepy clown to the curb.
First thing they would do is have to get rid of their icon Ronald McDonald. No more happymeal. They would have to make a slightly biggeer burger since your targeting an bigger consumer.I believe that changing the restaurants colors from a bright eye catching colors to a more darker solid maybe two-tone color scheme building wise. The food can stay the same minus the kids food you would just need to think of some sandwich ideas like a philly cheese, veggie burgers, or maybe a sub-burger I dont know really not the sandwich expert but it would have to be tweeked a little bit.
I think now it attracts alot of adults because the play place provides a place for adults with children to come because it's hard to have small kids sit still in a restaurant but if you wanted to market only to adults I think you would have to make the food a better quality and a more home cooked feel. I think the dollar menu could stay if you wanted to have a drive through for adults on the go because especially people from 20-25 still have fast paced lives and act kiddish at times but are viewed as full adults.I think the colors could stay because I've read they picked those colors because yellow and red make you think of food and make you hungry. Ronald McDonald would have to be replaced with something more classy. and the catch phrase "we love to see you smile" might have to be changed because when you hear that you would think of the old McDonalds.
It would take a lot of work to change how people view McDonalds especially since it's been in essence a Hmaburger stand as long as it's been around. Also it would depend alot on what direction your trying to go.
Is not changing anything an option? McDonald's targets children, and you don't really have any population of children operating in their lives free from parents, so it targets parents, too. Frankly, they could spend money on making food that is more parent-friendly, or they can just assume that parents will eat there too, since it is less convenient to make two stops. Adults have children. If you're marketing to the adult-sans-offspring demographic, you need to stop, because you're being stupid. Honestly Mcdonald's is targeting adults in the best way possible: children.
First off, they would need to redecorate by taking out all of the kid-friendly playgrounds and pictures and tone down the colors. They would also need to get rid of their "healthy" kid's meals and replace everything with more adult meals such as salad, maybe adding more coffee drinks, etc. McDonald's does target adults, but it's through their children. I don't think they have ever really tried that hard to gain a bigger group of adult consumers
