Discussion #4

What are some unethical advertising tactics or products you've seen? For example I shared the curbside house number painting example in class and how it sort of looked like it was from the city and emergency workers used the numbers.
Everyone wants our money... but who goes after it in an unfair way?

  1. My family and I went on a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean and got off the boat at Nassau on one of the last days. As we just started walking out of the port, a guy with a fancy camera was asking people if they wanted their picture taken either in front of the ship or whatever else and that it would be available in the photo gallery room on the ship. So we did, yet he failed to mention before we took the picture that it was going to cost us 25 bucks for that one picture. We then told him to go ahead and delete it if he wants haha.

  2. I think that the diamond industry is extremely crooked. They control the worlds supply of diamond to increase scarcity, bring the price way up. Then all of there advertising is to women of all ages. They give the young ladies the impression that their husband has to sweep them of their feet with a giant diamond for them to have a good life. It seem like ton of girls are waiting on a guy who can afford such a huge waste of money. I hope my future wife is up for an awesome honneymoon in place of some expensive diamond.

  3. I agree with the diamond industry. Another one I would also say are companies like Mediacom or Directv. They say that their packages start at such a low price and how much better they are than their competition, but when you actually go through with it and get that certain package, after a few months, the bills are majorly jacked up price wise. You can start off at $60 a month for 250 channels and they're all HD, but then aa few months later, it's jacked up to over $130 a month and it gets cut down to half those channels are HD.

  4. In my opinion I really believe that the fast food industry uses unethical tactics to get us to buy their food. They dress up their products to make them look great to eat. So many things happen behind the scenes of fast food ads. Hardly anything is real. It may be our choice to go and buy the food, but I don't like how the industry is promoting.

  5. Good examples! Commercials really nail home the "two month's salary" with engagement rings, trying to make that the norm and if you're spending anything less, you're not giving her what she's worth (if you read between the lines).
Jessica -- or anyone else -- have you seen Super Size Me? It addresses a few of the tactics used by the fast food industry, especially marketing towards kids (they love those Happy Meal Toys!).

  6. I believe the new "drink responsibly" ads are just a joke. Their are few people, that ive ever been around that drink responsibly, even if you have 3 or 4 beers or mix of poisions that is not responsible. the after effects are far more costly than the "responsible" buzz you'll get from drinking why not promote d.d's or recovery centers because you took "responsible drinking" to far one to many times.

  7. I think energy drink ads give kind of the wrong idea sometimes. It sounds as though you feel amazing after consuming them, but I never feel like doing extreme sports or flying around after I drink one, and there is no mention in the commercials (there is on the cans) of the fact that they can be really bad for you if overconsumed, which is basically the only way Americans do anything.

  8. I've seen Supersize me the day it came out, it was rediculous. I never really ever payed attention to what fast food restaurants do to get you to buy their food until watching that movie. It was crazy. As for what Jamie said, the alcohol businesses have addressed the "drink responsibly" commercials and now promote taking a taxi if you've drank too much. Ryan also makes a good point. The "world of red bull" ads are a joke. Travis Pastrana jumping the rally car during New Years eve last year then saying "welcome to my world, the world of red bull" is pretty much saying, "HEY, DRINK RED BULL AND YOU CAN JUMP A RALLY CAR 130 FEET OVER A RIVER!!!" I call B S because NOBODY I ever see drinks red bull plain, it's usually mixed with alcohol or something lol

  9. When alot of these so-called exercise weight lose guru's try an sell a product usually on television about how you can LOSE weight with barely moving a muscle. I cant remember the name of it but I know your suppost to hold it in your hand an it shakes back-n-forth an there tryin to tell people it can help you lose weight an slim your sides down BOLGONE. Any an everyone who has every worked out knows that if your not running, sweating, an eating correctly you have no chance at ever losing weight. Its a joke how people think that being lazy is goin 2 work an these people sell you these products telling you that it can work for you. An people always want a easier way to get things done an they sell with their products with that hope.

  10. The Diamond Companies I feel are one of the biggest one's next to fast food. I watched a video in my International Relations class about consumerism and the term 'Diamonds are Forever" wasn't invented until 1947 shortly after that they invented the diamond engagment ring, the anniversary diamond ring, and the 25 Year anniversary Diamond necklace.Ever since then diamond sales have risen all over the world and people think this stone means that if you get it the person giving it to you loves you more then anything and for some reason no other stone from the Earth matches the significance of a diamond or price and nobody knows why. Especially since films like Blood diamond have been released people should be more conscious of where such precious commodities come from.

In the end i think with such things as this we should know why and where were getting our product and FDA standards should be raised dramatically. Also a good movie watch about food is " Food Inc"
