Think about how Pringles is advertised. A big part of it is the packaging. The tube-shaped container for the chips are depicted as so much fun (and functional) in the commercials. What other products are marketed based on the packaging?
The thing about Pringles reminds me of a Mitch Hedberg joke about how he thinks they originally were supposed to be tennis balls. Off topic obviously but everyone should look it up because it's hilarious.
I am a sucker for buying things in packaging that can be re-used, like perfume I would never buy otherwise but will buy because it comes in a cute carrying case I can put other things in. I also just recently spent like two dollars more on shaving cream because it came in a really cool bottle- it doesn't work worth a crap, but it really improves the aesthetic of my shower.
Goin to Mcdonald's when we were kids all you wanted to get was a happy meal. Not just for the toy but the box that the food came in. It was marketed to us as kids that happy meals were cool an they came with handles an they would show kids walkin with their food at parks, outside, an ext.An when they would switch up their toys an boxes with themes or movies it made the food that much more of a want for us.
This reminds me of the can of jerky that they sell..they put jerky in a can that really looks like a can of chewing tobacco. how stupid. they want kids to think chewing is cool and that would be their first step in reeling them in. I guess I don't really know what the name of the stuff is.
I remeber this fruit snake from when I was a kid called string thing. The whole idea behind the product was that the fruit snack was pressed on to the paper in a design and you could peel it away bit by bit and change the pickture. A few other fruit snakes based on packaging is foot by the foot and fruit roll ups. All of these products main marketing tool is how the fruit comes packaged
The energy drinks in stores have the cool looking writing on them, they come in neat looking colors, and there are so many of them to choose, from that they have to sell the label. Making a commercial or ad isn't going to sell that indivual product; that does the same as the other 8 drinks in the store claim to do. So they make them stand out more than the next guy. think about red bull they were the 1st big label energy drink to come to the market and everyone was drinking them then others realized there is money to be made here and started selling the label. Now people are drinking the venom or whatever because its in a cooler bottle. Selling the label.
I agree a lot with what Jason said about the Happy Meals being in the cool boxes and they always changed and then when you were done eating you got your toy so it was a rewarding trip when you went to McDonalds. Also the one i liked alot was Go-Gurt they tried so hard to make just regular yogurt really cool because now it's in a tube so you don't to sit there like your mom and eat it with a spoon you could have it on the go. which i have to admit i was a big fan of go'gurt in 4th and 5th grade.
Packaging seems to lend itself to mostly impulse-buys, and there is nothing I buy more impulsively than cereal. It always has a sweet cartoon guy doing a dance and stuff. Nobody buys the stuff in the big bags because it doesn't appeal like that box art does.
Chips Ahoy Cookies have those easy open snack areas where all you have to do is peel back the flap on top, take out a cookie or too, then re-seal it. It's supposed to be fun, quick and easy for kids and adults to they can get back to having fun. The commercials that I've seen for them show the people opening the easy-open flap and then getting back to their lives. Like it's really like that... Ha.
