Stereotypes!

What are some common stereotypes found in advertising?

Find a link to an ad or commercial that uses stereotypes and talk about why it might be offensive to some people.

Can anyone think of or find a stereotype that isn't one of the typical ones talked about? (a few common ones.. Jocks, the elderly, the ditzy cheerleader, the nerd who can't talk to girls, and a lot of common racial stereotypes out there..)

This is an ad that stereotypes gay men, which I think is a less typical stereotype. It is interesting because it is actually a positive stereotype. Basically the ad is saying everyone knows gay dudes know how to dress well. This gay guy is wearing Levis. Therefore Levis are good fashionable jeans.

  2. I thought this was pretty funny. This stereotypes Caucasians, but in a jokingly way. However, this ad appeared to be banned. Caucasians appear to be "too tall" to work on things as good as Asians do.

  4. Stereotypes can be found in any Ad...you can usually spin any commercial in to showing what u want it to. Even things that have no stereotypes at all can be given the right context.

with the Mac vs PC commercials they give off the image that you are more modern or "cooler" based on the fact if u own a Mac. The characters in the commercial give off that image I believe

This commercial and others stereotype the mother's role in the household, pretty much any cleaning product does. In commercials and advertisements men are always doing things like grilling and fixing things and the mom is just running around cleaning up after everybody. I have a daughter and I don't know how to get any stains out of her clothes, so this commercial says I fail at life basically. Her dad is really good at doing laundry, he does it all the time. This commercial might make him feel like a little sissy.

I found a commercial that clearly says women are incapable of driving. This ad is older but when the women gets behind the wheel they play scary music and then it ends with her making it to the airport because she has these kind of tires. It basically says that without these tires no women is capable of driving alone

This Youtube clip is a total of 9 mins full of gender sterotypes in t.v. shows and in commercials. There's not much explination needed. Check it out, I thought it was pretty neat. There are few things that aren't totally school-friendly, but you get the general idea after the first few clips. The car wash clip starting at 5:28 of the video was pretty hilarious.

  8. I watched some racial stereotyping in disney movies video and as a child i never noticed all the stereotypes that are in childrens movies and t.v. shows. The most interesting was how they pointed out that in the power rangers the black ranger was actually black and was a hip hop dancer and that the yellow ranger was asian and did martial arts. Very interesting check it out.
